HFL 6 Girls win the 8th Annual Christopher's Challenge-EBA Tournament

Great Championship Weekend

The HFL 6 Girls won the 8th Annual Christopher'sChallenge-EBA Tournament this weekend. The team went undefeated by beating Eastside, Oswego, and Pelham, Canada in the opening rounds, and then soundly beating Eastside in the Championship game.

The tournament opened Friday night at St. John Fisher College. The HFL 6 girls defeated Eastside 32-27.  HFL 6 was down by four points at half time. Alyssa Lewis got the team going in the second half by hitting two quick jump shots. The team got the momentum and never looked back. The Cougars started fastbreaking with Brittany Chamberlain passing to open teammates. Erin Beikirch and Megan Slymon played shut down defense on two of Eastside's best scorers. The team had balanced scoring with Madison Meehan (8 points). Six other Cougar players scored.

On Saturday, the HFL 6 Cougars defeated Oswego in a physically played game. Gillian Kurtic led the scoring with fourteen points. Brittany Chamberlain, Rhiannon Demilio, and Emma Gilbert added four points each. The balance scoring continued with Tori Jones, Elise Olivio, and Megan Slymon contributing. Melissa Antalek and Emma Hagreen provided a physical presence inside that made it difficult for Oswego.

The excitment continued Sunday against Pelham of Canada. The HFL 6 Cougars were down by one point with 7 seconds remaining and Pelham inbounding the ball. The Cougars full court press forced Pelham in to a turnover with 6 seconds remaining. Madison Meehan throw a long pass to Gillian Kurtic near the basket. Gillian caught the ball, pivoted toward the hoop, and shot with no time left on the clock. A two shot foul was called. Gillian stepped to the free throw line with 00.0 seconds showing on the clock and no players along the free throw line. Gillian calmly made both shots enabling the HFL 6 Cougars to continue their winning ways. Gillian finished with 10 points, as well as three key block shots near the end of the game. Madison Meehan added 7 points, Rhiannon Demilio six points, Elise Olivio four, Brittany Chamberlain four, and Megan Slymon two. 

The Championship game was played later Sunday pitting HFL 6 Cougars against Eastside. The Cougars played hard all weekend, and needed to sum up the strength to compete at a high level one more time. The Cougars were definitely up to the challenge. The team scored the first six points and never trailed in the game. HFL 6 defeated Eastside 35-25. Brittany Chamberlain had four points, but more importantly controlled the offense with cool and confidence. Again, balanced scoring was the key. Rhiannon Demilio and Gillian Kurtic each had 10 points. Madison Meehan four, Elise Olivio three, Megan Slymon two, and Alyssa Lewis two. Erin Beikirch, Megan Slymon, Tori Jones, Emma Hagreen, and Meliisa Antalek played outstanding defense, making it difficult for Eastside to get inside and convert.

The Championship the HFL 6 Girls won was a thrilling experience for both players and families. Their effort was awesome.
