HFL Grade 8 Boys March Madness Champs
The Grade 8 HFL Boys used tenacious defense to finish the season with four straight wins to earn the March Madness Championship Crown. With impressive victories over Victor, Hilton, Brockport and East Irondequoit the boys concluded their final season in style.
In game 1, the HFL boys used torrid shooting and a lock-down defense to stifle a strong Victor 8th grade team 49-36 to avenge a 17 point loss earlier in the season.
After a see-saw battle against Hilton-Select in game two, the Cougars found themselves trailing by one with 10 seconds left. Six seconds and three fouls later, HFL finally had the ball out of bounds at half-court.
Coleman broke out of a stack-set to free himself at the 3-point arc where he gathered a great pass from Josh. Tightly covered, Coleman dished to Conner who buried the three pointer as time expired to seal the 45-43 victory!
Game three of the tournament was another nail-biter for the grade 8 Cougars. Defense was the key against a quick and athletic Brockport club. Bryce, Jonny, Bryan, Tommy and Coleman led the charge playing an aggressive 2-3 and a trapping zone which kept the Blue Devils out of their comfort zone.
Great rebounding by Ryan, Shane, and Josh held the physical Brockport team to one-shot per trip while some nice scoring from Danny, Tommy, and Coleman kept the Cougars in control through three periods.
Brockport's swarming defense started to take it's toll in the fourth quarter as they climbed back from a 32-21 deficit to take close within one. However, clutch free-throw shooting by Conner enabled HFL to sneak out with a 48-45 victory.
Game four was no less exciting for the champion Cougars. Behind by six at the end of one, they stormed back in the second period to take a 27-20 halftime lead against East Irondequoit. Having beaten HFL three times earlier this season, EI was not going to give in easily, and worked the game back to even at 37 all going into the final eight minutes.
The fourth quarter saw several lead changes, and with 51 seconds left, the Cougars were up by one with the ball. They decided to try to hold the ball and win the game from the foul line. However, a turnover with 22 seconds left gave East Irondequoit new hope. With 5 seconds EI's last attempt rimmed out, HFL controlled the boards, and earned the victory to finish the March Madness Tournament a perfect 4-0.
The HFL 7 Girls defeated Penfield in the Championship Game of the March Madness Tournament held at St. John Fisher College. The team lost to Hilton in overtime in its first round game, but then regrouped and defeated Rochester Prep (47-23), Pinnacle of Buffalo (42-25), and Penfield (49-33). The Cougars faced Penfield in the Championship Game and defeated the Patriots 53-35. The tournament victory capped a wonderful season for the team. Congratulations to Emma Rowe, Melissa Antalek, Alyssa Lewis, Erin Beikirch, Emma Hagreen, Tori Jones, Elise Olivo, Megan Slymon, Emma Gilbert, Rhiannon Demilio, Madison Meehan, Brittany Chamberlain, and Gillian Kurtic.
The HFL 7 Girls are champions of the Rochester Bash Tournament held at Hilton High School (Febraury 18-19). The Cougars lost their opening round game to Hilton Select (36-22), but then defeated Pinnacle of Buffalo (34-24) in the second round and Rochester Prep (33-17) in the third round. The HFL 7 Cougars defeated Hilton Select in the Championship game 24-16. The Cougars showed incredible courage and toughness throughout the tourney. The Cougars made adjustments that the Hilton team was unable to react successfully against. It was a wonderful team effort with outstanding defensive play. The Cougars controled the boards and limited Hilton rebounding opprotunities. Additionally, the defensive adjustments the Cougars made paid off. Hilton's top two scorers were held to four points. For the game, Hilton only made seven baskets and two free throws. The HFL 7 Girls ran their offensive sets well and converted free throws at crucial times. Finally, the team displayed sportswomanship throughout the tournament.
